New Direction worker Charanjeet helped a tenant who attended the CAB she is based in. He had come to a drop in session as he couldn’t afford the pay the bedroom tax. Charanjeet helped him apply for a DHP to deal with the immediate issue and then used the budget completed as part of the DHP to identify savings.
They looked at the criteria for the Warm Home Discount and found that he was entitled to it with his energy provider. Charanjeet helped him call them and applied for it over the phone. He was advised that it had been awarded straight away.
He also wanted to open a bank account and they looked at what was available. The tenant wanted a branch that was local. They called and made an appointment to open the account, which the client attended. Charanjeet also explained the process he needed to go through to get his benefits changed to the new account.
A few months later, the client contacted Charanjeet again. Do due poor health, he was using a lot of water and was finding the bills hard to deal with. Charanjeet helped him apply for Watersure which offers a capped rate for his bills. He also said that his energy company hadn’t followed up on the warm home discount award. Charanjeet called them and they confirmed that the money was waiting for him, so she arranged for them to produce a bar code and send it out so the client could get his electricity key topped up at a pay point.
